Other places to learn Welsh
Flashcards Cymraeg is for practising what you learn somewhere else, so here are some good places to learn: courses, people and places worth knowing about, whether you're just starting out or picking Welsh up again.
Nobody pays to be on this page, and none of them are connected to Flashcards Cymraeg. They're here because they're good.
A course with a tutor
Learn Welsh (Dysgu Cymraeg)
The National Centre for Learning Welsh runs courses across Wales and online, at every level from Mynediad to Gloywi: in a classroom, in a virtual classroom, or as a mix of classes and self-study. Flashcards Cymraeg is built around it: the levels you choose for your projects are its levels.
Speaking
SaySomethingin Welsh
An audio course that has you speaking Welsh from the very first lesson, no reading or writing, just listening and answering out loud. A great partner to a class, especially if speaking is the part that makes you nervous.
Videos and grammar
Doctor Cymraeg
Stephen Rule is a Welsh teacher who answers the questions learners actually ask, in short, friendly videos on YouTube and social media. He's written books for learners, too.
Books
Cant a Mil
A Welsh-language bookshop in Cardiff, with a big section for learners and books for every level, for adults and children. The shop runs reading and conversation groups for learners (a friendly, low-pressure way to use your Welsh) and sells online as well.
Watching
S4C
Wales's Welsh-language television channel. Its on-demand service, S4C Clic, has a Learn Welsh channel with programmes picked out for learners, and watching with subtitles is a gentle way into real, everyday Welsh.
Listening
BBC Radio Cymru
The BBC's Welsh-language radio station: music, chat and news, live or on BBC Sounds. Even with it on in the background, your ear gets used to the sound and rhythm of natural Welsh.
Dictionary
Geiriadur Prifysgol Cymru
The great dictionary of the Welsh language, free online and as an app. Definitions are in Welsh, with English equivalents. It's the place to check a word's gender, its plural, or what it really means.
For quick reference while you learn, there are also our own free Welsh guides on mutations, numbers, telling the time, North and South Welsh, long and short forms, and prepositions.
