Using Flashcards Effectively
Understanding Spaced Repetition
Flashcards Cymraeg uses a scientifically-proven learning method called spaced repetition. This means:
- Cards you find easy will be shown less frequently
- Cards you find difficult will be shown more often
- The system calculates the optimal time to review each card
- This maximizes your learning efficiency and long-term retention
Rating Your Performance
When studying, you'll rate how well you remembered each card:
Wrong
You didn't remember the word at all. The card will be shown again soon.
Hard
You remembered with difficulty. The card will be shown again relatively soon.
Good
You remembered correctly with some effort. Standard interval increase.
Easy
You remembered easily. The card will have a longer interval before being shown again.
Study Modes
Flashcards Cymraeg offers two ways to study your cards:
Test Mode (Spaced Repetition)
Available from a project or deck. You see a Welsh word, try to recall the answer, then reveal it and rate your recall (Wrong, Hard, Good, Easy). The system uses these ratings to schedule each card at the optimal time for long-term retention. Best for building lasting vocabulary knowledge.
Drill Mode (Active Practice)
Available from individual decks. Works through cards in small groups with a brief slideshow preview, then tests you in two rounds: multiple-choice followed by type-the-answer. Great for initial learning and quick revision. Your results also update the spaced repetition schedule, so every drill counts towards your progress.
Study Tips
- Be honest with your ratings - This helps the algorithm work effectively
- Study regularly - Short, frequent sessions are better than long, infrequent ones
- Focus on understanding - Don't just memorize, try to understand the Welsh words
- Use both directions - Practice Welsh to English and English to Welsh
- Add context - Use the notes field to add example sentences or grammar notes
Managing Your Cards
